Chapter 17

Collin stopped at the Repository, just to be on the safe side. He'd hate to drive all the way to Adelaide only to learn that Tomas was not as trustworthy as he'd believed.

The Repository was not an easy place to locate, by design. Buried underground, it was kept safe from attack by man or mage.

The facility was loaded with high-tech scanners, identification systems, weapons, surveillance, and cloaked by magic dampening fields built into the walls.

Collin nodded at the guards stationed inside the hidden tunnel and offered his retinal scan to the device near the door. After several seconds of mechanical clicks and whirs, the door opened, then closed and locked behind him. Collin always felt an intense pressure in his skull once he got inside. He'd assumed that it was that way for everyone, but knowing what he did now about his roots, it was beginning to seem that it might just be him.

"Hi Jenny," He greeted the pretty young woman at the front desk. Jenny was security for one of the first of many locked entrances to the Repository vault.

"Commander," she smiled and toyed with a lock of her blonde hair, "What brings you here?"

"Just need to grab a sample." He slid the top sheet of the fax across the surface of the desk so she could read the number.

She tapped it into her keyboard and scribbled some information on a post-it note, "Anything else?"

"Yeah…could you check the status on a Logan Grey?"

"Certainly," Jenny changed screens so that she could access records by name, then she jotted some more information on the same post-it and handed it to Collin.

Collin frowned at the record number and location regarding Logan's alleged sample.

"How long have you had Grey's sample in storage?"

Jenny consulted the info that was still up on her screen, "Since three years ago, this February."

"Do you know who collected the sample from him?"

"Sgt. John Gislain," Jenny pursed her lips and sighed, "I'm really sorry about your battalion's losses, Commander."

Collin sighed, "Yeah, we all are; Thanks a lot for your help, Jenny."

"Anytime, Commander," she said in a voice that bordered on sultry and pressed the button under her desk to release the first set of locks.

Collin smiled and went through the door, knowing that she was flirting, but was too distracted to do much about it. Not that he'd take her up on any offers. He practiced a strict policy of keeping business and pleasure in two very different worlds. Except, he realized, when it came to Logan. The boundaries were beginning to blur where the renegade mage was concerned, and Collin wasn't certain what that might mean for his future. Not that he actually saw any future with Logan. Aside from the fact that Collin couldn't fathom taking up anything serious with a member of his own sex, Logan was not the kind of person who was interested in the kind of commitment Collin sought in a partner. Not to mention the fact that they should have been enemies.

After many more security codes and scans, Collin finally made it to the main storehouse.
